The phrase “as well as” means “in addition to” or “not only”. When used with a verb, the -ING form is typically used. It can be placed either before or after the noun it is adding to. In Arabic, this phrase can be translated as:
إلى جانبِ، فَضْلاً عن، كَذَلِكَ أَيْضًا، بِالإِضَافَةِ إلى
Examples:
1. “As well as learning how to swim, he has been taking Dutch lessons.”
بِالإِضَافَةِ إلى تَعَلُّمِهِ السِّبَاحَةَ، فَإِنَّهُ بَدَأَ يَأْخُذُ دُرُوسًا لِتَعَلُّمِ اللُّغَةِ الهُولَنْدِيَّةِ.
2. “John passed the driving test, as well as Duncan.”
(= “John passed the driving test, and Duncan did as well.”)
“Both John and Duncan passed the driving test.”
“John passed the driving test, as did Duncan.”
“John passed the driving test, and Duncan did, too.”
نَجَحَ جُونُ في اِمْتِحَانِ السِّيَاقَةِ/القِيَادَةِ، وَكَذَلِكَ دَنْكَنْ.
نَجَحَ جُونُ في اِمْتِحَانِ السِّيَاقَةِ/القِيَادَةِ، وَنَجَحَ دَنْكَنْ أَيْضًا.
نَجَحَ كُلٌّ مِنْ جُونَ وَدَنْكَنْ في اِمْتِحَانِ السِّيَاقَةِ/القِيَادَةِ.
نَجَحَ جُونُ في اِمْتِحَانِ السِّيَاقَةِ/القِيَادَةِ، كَمَا نَجَحَ دَنْكَنْ.
📌 NOTE: Observe the difference in meaning between:
1. “She writes, as well as acting on the stage.”
(She writes, whereas she also works as an actress.)
إِنَّهَا تَكْتُبُ وَتُمَثِّلُ عَلَى المَسْرَحِ أَيْضًا.
2. “She writes as well as she acts.”
(Her writing is as good as her acting.)
إِنَّهَا تَبْرَعُ في الكِتَابَةِ وَفِي التَّمْثِيلِ كَذَلِكَ.
“As well” as a synonym for “too”
The phrase “as well” can also mean “too”, but it is only used after a noun.
Example:
“You shouldn’t be angry with him, everyone else forgot to do it as well.”
يَجِبُ أَنْ لَا تَغْضَبَ مِنْهُ لِأَنَّ الآخَرِينَ نَسُوا أَنْ يَفْعَلُوهُ (ذَلِكَ) أَيْضًا.
“As well” with “may” or “might”
When “as well” is preceded by “may” or “might”, it means “with the same effect” and is translated into Arabic as مِنَ المُسْتَحْسَنِ أَنْ.
Example:
“You might as well give him the photographs since I don’t need them anymore.”
مِنَ المُسْتَحْسَنِ أَنْ تُعْطِيَهُ الصُّوَرَ لِأَنِّي لَمْ أَعُدْ أَحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهَا.
📌 NOTE: Do not confuse “as well” with “as well as” used for comparison
1. “She plays tennis just as well.”
(= She is as good a tennis player as she is, for instance, an ice-skater.)
إِنَّهَا تَبْرَعُ فِي لُعْبِ التِّنِسِ كَمَا تَبْرَعُ فِي التَّزَلُّجِ عَلَى الجَلِيدِ.
This phrase is used to indicate that someone is equally skilled in two different activities.
